Paid Dues 2010 Lineup Announced

By AnneJojo (IE) | February 3, 2010 | Music

Murs 3:16 in association with Guerilla Union released the 2010 lineup for the annual Paid Dues Independent Hip Hop Festival this morning. Aside from the roll he plays as a member of the Living Legends crew, Murs has also established a name for himself as a solo artist. He’s worked with other seminal underground idols such as 9th Wonder, Slug and Ant of Atmosphere, and Aesop Rock, and is, in fact, better than your favorite rapper. Guerilla Union has created three inimitable hip hop and crossover platforms: the world class Rock the Bells Series, the stoner’s paradise Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival, and Paid Dues. The two partners in crime can only lead to spectacular results.

Paid Dues gives independent hustlers a platform to share their music that is widely ignored by popular media. It gives audience members a place to embrace the hip hop culture and to escape from mainstream confinements. This year’s 5th annual event features artists from across the underground board—from host Dumbfoundead to the reunion of LA’s Freestyle Fellowship to the (recently converted indie label) headliner Ice Cube, you’ll find it all at Paid Dues.

Sign up for the Guerilla Union mailing list to receive pre-sale information, exclusive to subscribers, at www.guerillaunion.com/paiddues.

John West’s 45 days of Hustlin’

By TheFreshMan (LA) | January 28, 2010 | Feature, Music

LiveInColor

45 days before his show at the Roxy, John West began the “Humble Hustle.” From performing on 3rd Street in Santa Monica and selling cd’s to passing out flyers to even picking up the pre-sale tickets himself. This is the attitude that any person, artist or not, should have in order to accomplish their goals in life. Talking to John on 3rd was cool. His approach to music is definitely to have fun and exude the love he has for it through his sound and lyrics. To show his true dedication to the humble hustle, the rain that was dropping on us at 3rd did not stop him from finishing his set. He just looked at the crowd around him, smiled, and just continued.

When the day of the show finally arrived, there were a few people already in line 3 hours before doors opened. The Assemble crew went in the Roxy, during rehearsal of the opening acts, and hit up the dressing rooms to chat with John himself. By the time the interview ended the line outside grew to at least a hundred people waiting to buy a ticket or just enter the venue. Starting the night was Matt Masih and The Messengers. Good way to open because their music is energetic and Matt has the voice to lead a band. Matt Cusson’s tribute to the late Michael Jackson was a good surprise as well. With the venue completely sold out and some unfortunate delays, John finally hit the stage around 11 p.m. His set started with “Got it good” that just got the crowd’s heads nodding and the girls singing along. I’m definitely a fan of “Saints and Sinners,” which of course delivered and reminded me of the first time hearing it on 3rd. His stage presence was good and entire crowd was just vibing to the music. Of course he encored with “Loved you tonight,” which I believe is his current single. It was a good night for music at the Roxy. I can only hope John gets signed soon and we get to see more of him. He did mention a possible House of Blues show. We’ll keep you guys posted. Keep it fresh.

The Sound of ‘The Book of Eli’

By TheFreshMan (LA) | January 20, 2010 | Film, Music

cover

Any fans of Denzel Washington will go and see his new film, “The Book of Eli.” As action packed as this film has promised to be, the soundtrack has also delivered. Atticus Ross, who produced music for Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s addiction, gives audiences the perfect sound to any post-apocalyptic scenario. This original score was first produced in Ross’ LA studio, but finished in Abbey Road studios in London with an 80-piece orchestra. The electronic sound that is well known in his past work is evident in this production as well. We’ve all seen movies in the past, particularly action flicks, where the music is a driving force in keeping audiences’ hearts beating fast. If you guys haven’t seen the movie yet, go out and check it out. Also check out The Book of Eli soundtrack, brought to us by Atticus Ross and Reprise Records

To win a copy of this soundtrack and a Book of Eli t-shirt email Contact@theassembled.com with your name and email. Assemble and Filter Magazine will give the first person to email us a copy of this epic soundtrack. Keep it fresh.

John West has ‘Got It Good’

By TheFreshMan (LA) | January 16, 2010 | Music

3rdSt-2

It was just a normal day for my girlfriend and I. Shopping on a saturday at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica was standard issue. All the street performers were out doing their thing as usual. That day was particularly different because we ran into John West. His voice has a soulful sound to it and is refreshing as well. It’s about time the music world gave me hope that a new set of real artists will continue producing great music. The words in his songs are personal and I felt I could relate to what he was saying throughout the set. Performance wise, John was charming and definitely entertained the group huddled around him and his guitar. Here’s a video of him performing on 3rd:

“DJ AM” DUNK HIGH PREMIUM QUICKSTRIKE

By Ervz (LA) | January 8, 2010 | Fashion, Music

DJ AM rest in peace. Hands down one of the best DJs to ever touch the turntables. His mixes are an excellent balance of cuts, blends, new hits, classic re-interpretations, and just good music that lots of people really enjoyed dancing and partying too. I was able to catch him live in LA a couple of years ago and dude tore up a Hollywood crowd like it was no one’s business. The energy and stage presence he had was special. Almost as noteworthy as his illustrious DJ career, is the man’s shoe collection, which was DEEP, DEEP, DEEPER THAN ATLANTIS. This Dunk High Premium does DJ AM justice with its black patent leather and supple red leather upper. The dot pattern on the heel represents the side of the Technic 1200 turntable platter, and the DJ AM logo on the tongue tag. This is a really special shoe and tribute to AM. Peace and blessings to his fam and may his legacy live on through this catalog of mixes.

What more can I say that hasn’t been already said about DJ Premier? On the real. “P-p-p-p-p-p-premier. Premier. Premier. Premier.” from the mixtapes to forming one of the most historic East Coast/NY hip-hop groups with Guru: GANGSTARR-to just being a purveyor of the that true hip-hop boom-bap and the culture. His beats, his voice, his contributions to the music…legendary. He’s the reason why lots of DJs, myself included, started DJing, and I STILL CANNOT CUT LIKE PRIMO, fam! Nike’s first half of the “DJ Pack” is this “DJ Premier” Air Force 1 Premium, which has his “Year Round” record label logo laser etched on the side, “DJ PREMIER” boldly laser etched across the back heels of both left and right shoes, “PREMIER” on the metal lace lock, all black everything upper, and a jelly outsole with at turntable pattern graphic underneath. By TheFreshMan (LA) | December 17, 2009 | Music

Dj-BabuProduction

DJ Babu of the World Famous Beat Junkies has always had an ear for music production. With his dope Duck Season mixes and the success of The Beat Tape Vol. 1, I’ve been anticipating a follow up instrumental effort. Set to release The Beat Tape Vol. 2 in February 2010, I’m sure Babu will not disappoint. Fellow beat junkies should keep a lookout for the upcoming release. Here’s a sneak peak of one of the tracks from The Beat Tape Vol. 2 entitled “Lil Juanito”:
